Künker sale 352, lot 1985

The first specimen was lot 40125 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Nassau-Weilburg-Usingen. Ducat, 1809. NGC MS-62. Demarete Collection." The second specimen was lot 1985 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"NASSAU, HERZOGTUM, Friedrich August zu Usingen, 1803-1816 und Friedrich Wilhelm zu Weilburg, 1806-1816. Dukat 1809. GOLD. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, duchy of Nassau, joint coinage of Frederick Augustus of Usingen, 1803-16, and Frederick William of Weilburg, 1806-16, ducat of 1809. Choice example, about extremely fine.)"

Nassau-Weilburg and Nassau-Usingen were merged in 1816. The coinage ended when Nassau was annexed by Prussia in 1866. This rare type was a joint issue.

Recorded mintage: 3,543.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, the second specimen 3.50 g.
