Sincona sale 18, lot 1339

This specimen was lot 1339 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 350 (about US$461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Taler 1641. Zellerfeld. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, thaler of 1641, Zellerfeld mint, good very fine.)"

The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. This type is listed for 1639-42 and is one of many "wild man" thalers from this locale.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.02 g.
