This specimen was lot 666 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg. Taler, 1644. NGC MS-62. Nice toning." The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. This type is listed for 1643-45 and was followed by similar types (Dav-6513 and Dav-6514) struck until 1649. They are priced well over double the contemporaneous "wild man" thalers (Dav-6516, -6517).
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
