In 1868 the silver coinage of Brazil was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. The type shown here is the first of several minor modifications and was struck 1868-69. Unlike the issues of 1851-67 and 1875-89, it is only 25 grams instead of the usual 25.5 grams.
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
Specification: 25 g, .900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 475.
