H3067-32331r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32331 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1706 S-P AU55 NGC, Seville mint. Despite its being crudely struck as are many of this type, this Almost Uncirculated specimen exhibits a bold strike in the central areas, and only minor weakness around the peripheries. Small areas of mint luster remain and the surfaces show only light marks. Very rare in this grade." This was issued from Seville in the midst of the War of the Spanish Succession, wherein Philip V successfully defeated the archduke Charles' attempt to seize the throne. This expensive type was struck 1701-19.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.47 grams, .917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 260, Fr-247, Cayón-9905.
