This specimen was lot 33698 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Finland: Russian Duchy. Nicholas II 25 Pennia 1876-S VF25 NGC, Helsinki mint. The undisputed key date of the series and one of the great rarities of Finnish numismatics, struck to an incredibly small figure when the surrounding years typically saw between 200,000 and 800,000 pieces minted. Most examples survive in extremely poor condition, usually not exceeding VG Details, making this is conditional rarity as well." This type is listed for 1872-76, 1889-99, 1907-17 and was struck for Finland by the czarist administration. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence.
Recorded mintage: 1,200.
Specification: 1.27 g, .750 fine silver, 16 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 6.2, Sieg-32.
