This specimen was lot 3161 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler 1688. Gutes sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, thaler of 1688, good very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. Except for the change of ruler, it is virtually identical to the prior type (Dav-3508) issued 1668-86. This type is also catalogued as Dav-1234.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.47 g.
