Piacenza 1599 quadrupla rev Stacks 1010-772.jpg

This specimen was lot 772 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, October 2010), where it sold for $3,737.50. The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIAN STATES. PIACENZA. Ranuccio I Farnese, 1592-1622. Quadrupla, 1599. Mailed bearded bust l. of the fourth Duke as Prince of the Holy Roman Empire. Rv. She-wolf under crowned laurel tree, PLACENTIA FLORET, May Piacenza Flourish. Nearly fully round. exceptionally sharp strike and detail rank this among the lustrous jewels of Renaissance Gold coinage in North-Central Italy. Extremely Fine."

As a doppia was a double ducat, a two doppie was four ducats. The SCWC mentions this coin under Piacenza, not Parma, and notes that it was issued 1599-1622.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.44 g, .917 fine gold, .396 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: CNI IX:4, Fr.907.
