SB121-20384r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 33023 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy. Piacenza. Odoardo Farnese 2 Doppie (Quadrupla) 1626 AU58 NGC. A beautifully styled 17th-century double doppie, produced upon a lustrous flan of sound quality and bearing expressive designs very nearly preserved to their full Mint State splendor. The strike is firm, with a glowing brilliance igniting across the fields upon in-hand rotation and inspection. An exceptional coin." The second specimen was lot 20384 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[2] noted, "ITALY. Parma & Piacenza. 2 Doppie, 1626-LX. Odoardo I Farnese. NGC AU Details--Tooled. Struck for Piacenza. Obverse: ODOAR FAR PL ET PAR DVX V, bareheaded, draped, and armored bust right, wearing ruffled collar; Reverse: PLACENTIA FLORET, Lupa Romana standing left; in background, crown above lily plant. Endowed with a great renaissance portrait, this broad denomination also features a great representation of the she-wolf of Rome on [t]he reverse. Some light tooling on the edges is noted, as well as some marks in the field, but they do not detract from the overall charm offered here." This quadrupla was struck 1626 and 1631 and is rare, like most Italian gold coins of the seventeenth century. A quadrupla was four scudi d'oro, not four ducats. The both specimens are dated MDCXXVI. Specimens are known dated 1631.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 12.90-13.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, 31 mm diameter, this specimen 12.99 g.

Catalog reference: KM 14, Fr-917, MIR-1161/1.
