This type, a forty réis or pataco was struck 1820-25 and is scarce in nice condition. These heavy bronze coins received much abuse and are normally found in low grade. The last pataco was struck in 1847. King João VI was regent for his mother starting in 1799 and became king on his mother's death in 1816.

Recorded mintage: 1,574,857.

Specification: 38.4 g, bronze, 36 mm diameter.
