This specimen was lot 761 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it sold for €380 (about US$502 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), Cu gigot (duit), 1581, Bois-le-Duc. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné, entre 8-1. Rare. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, copper duit of 1581, Hertogenbosch mint. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms divide "8-1". Rare, very fine.)"
In the Dutch provincial system of the eighteenth century, a duit was a copper coin worth one-eighth of a stuiver or 1/480 of a ducaton. This one seems to be about half the weight of the liard.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper, this specimen 2,31 g.
