Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1260

This specimen was lot 1260 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €150 (about US$214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR 5 francs, 1806M, Toulouse. Rare Nettoyé. Beau à Très Beau. (empire of France, Napoleon I, 1804-14, silver five francs of 1806, Toulouse mint. Rare, cleaned, Fine - Very Fine.)"

Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Toulouse mint (mint mark "M") in 1806. It is a rare date. The Toulouse mint struck French coins until 1829. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the fifth, struck 1806-07 with a complete set of this type comprising 23 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All silver five francs were officially recalled in 1928 but ceased to circulate after World War I. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents.

Recorded mintage: 21,930.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: Dav-83; Gadoury 581; Mazard 440, KM 673.9, F.304/8.
