This specimen was lot 40338 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/4 Angel, ND (1582). London Mint; mm: Sword. Elizabeth I. PCGS EF-40. Fifth issue. Obverse: St. Michael standing facing, head right, spearing dragon to lower right with spear topped by cross crosslet; Reverse: Ship bearing shield and cross; E and rose flanking cross. A rather SCARCE fractional denomination from the later reign of Elizabeth I. Having escaped all but the gentlest of wear, the coin maintains a charmingly crisp and legible strike despite the limitations of the miniature planchet. Overflowing with bright yellow luster and noteworthy for its well-kept wholesome quality. From the Lucius S. Ruder Collection." The angel was tariffed at six shillings and eight pence (one third of a pound), making this coin one shilling eight pence. This denomination is rare. During the reign of Elizabeth, mintmarks appear more often and were changed more frequently than before, allowing coins to be dated within a year or two.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 20 grains (1.29 g), gold, 17 mm diameter, this specimen 1.16 g.
