Künker sale 424, lot 523

This specimen was lot 523 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €24,000 (about US$33,984 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, BISTUM Christoph Bernhard von Galen, 1650-1678. 1 1/2fache Dukatenklippe 1652, Münster. CHR · BERN · DG : EP · MO - BVRG · STROM · S · R · I · P · Vierfeldiges, verziertes Wappen (Münster, Stromberg / Stromberg, Münster) mit dem Familienwappen von Galen als Mittelschild, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt//(Verzierung) / DVCATVS / NOVVS · EPI / MONAST / 1652, umher Palm- und Lorbeerzweig. GOLD. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. Exemplar der Slg. Dieter Braun, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 249, Osnabrück 2014, Nr. 1730. (Germany, bishopric of Münster, Münster mint. Obverse: quartered arms of Münster and Stromberg with the escutcheon of Galen over crossed crozier and sword; reverse: inscription in palm and laurel wreath. Extremely rare, attractive very fine example.)"

The privy mark below the shield appears to be a goose or swan. This issue was accompanied by a single ducat (Fr-1771) and a thaler (Dav-5599).

Specification: 5.25 g, 0.986 fine gold; this specimen 5,17 g.
