Munster 1647 ducat Fr-1767
This specimen was lot 517 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,399 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, BISTUM Ferdinand von Bayern, 1612-1650. Dukat 1647, Münster. Gekröntes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Bayern, Pfalz / Pfalz, Bayern) mit Mittelschild von Münster, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt//(Verzierung) / DVCATVS / NOVVS · EPI / MONAST / 1647 ·, umher Palm- und Lorbeerzweig. GOLD. RR Leicht gewellt, sehr schön +. Exemplar der Slg. Günther Jansen, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 339, Osnabrück 2020, Nr. 154. (Germany, bishopric of Münster, Ferdinand of Bavaria, 1612-50, ducat of 1647, Münster mint. Obverse: crowned and quartered arms of Bavaria and the Palatinate with escutcheon of Münster, behind, a crossed crozier and sword; reverse: inscription in palm and laurel wreath. Very rare, slightly wavy, choice very fine,)"
In 1647, the bishop also issued a single thaler (Dav-5596), a double thaler (Dav-5594 and Dav-5596), a klippe double ducat (Fr-1766a) and a five ducats (Fr-1764). The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. The bishop succeeded in establishing the Counter-Reformation there and holding the region for the Catholic Church. Ferdinand was also bishop of Hildesheim, Liege and Paderborn and archbishop of Cologne.
