Munster 1650 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 522 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €8,500 (about US$12,036 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, BISTUM Sedisvakanz 1650. 1/2 Reichstaler 1650, Münster, mit Titel Ferdinands III. Kapitelschild mit dem Brustbild des Heiligen Paulus mit Schwert und Buch, zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 50//Der gekrönte und geharnischte Kaiser Ferdinand steht v. v. mit umgelegtem Mantel, Schwert und Reichsapfel. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. Exemplar der Slg. Dieter Braun, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 249, Osnabrück 2014, Nr. 1726. (Germany, bishopric of Münster, vacancy of 1650, half thaler of 1650, Münster mint, struck in the name of Ferdinand III. Obverse: arms of the cathedral chapter with the bust of St. Paul with sword and book dividing the date; reverse: the crowned, mantled and armored emperor stands with sword and orb. Extremely rare, attractive very fine example.)"
This sede vacante half thaler, struck 1650, was issued during a vacancy on the episcopal throne. The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. The bishop succeeded in establishing the Counter-Reformation there and holding the region for the Catholic Church. Ferdinand was also bishop of Hildesheim, Liege and Paderborn and archbishop of Cologne.
