This specimen was lot 16 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,080 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Victoria, 1837-1901. Sovereign 1874, Melbourne. Vorzüglich-FDC. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Australia, Victoria, 1837-1901, sovereign of 1874, Melbourne mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Extraordinary condition.)"
The familiar "St. George and the dragon" type was struck 1871-87 at the Melbourne and Sydney mints simultaneously with the "shield" type. No shield type sovereigns were minted at Melbourne between 1875 and 1879. The SCWC does not attempt to separate the mintages of the two types. The Melbourne mint was opened in 1872 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1916.
