This specimen was lot 70249 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Sovereign, 1874-M. Melbourne Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-61 Gold Shield. A great Mint State survivor, this brilliant specimen offers a dazzling golden-olive tone." This "St. George and the dragon" type was struck 1871-87 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints simultaneously with the familiar "shield" type. The SCWC does not attempt to separate the mintages of the two types.
Recorded mintage: 1,373,000 (including the "shield" reverse).
