Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 868

This specimen was lot 868 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €700 (about US$932 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Johann Georg Ier (1615-1656), AR double Taler, 1632HI, Dresde. D/ B. cuir. de l'électeur à d., ten. un heaume et une épée sur l'épaule. R/ Ecu surmonté de six heaumes. Rare Légère trace de monture. presque Très Beau. (electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, silver double thaler of 1632, Dresden mint. Obverse: armored bust of the elector to right, bearing a helmet and sword; reverse: six helmeted arms. Rare, trace of mounting, about Very Fine.)"

Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type was issued 1620-38. The SCWC lists this date with mintmaster HS but we can attest a single thaler (Dav-7601) from 1631 with mintmaster HI.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 57,79 g.

Catalog reference: Schnee 844; Dav-7600, KM 133.
