Künker sale 400, lot 140

This specimen was lot 140 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$12,324 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HESSEN-DARMSTADT, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, Ernst Ludwig, 1678-1739. Dukat 1717, Darmstadt, auf die 200-Jahrfeier der Reformation. ERNEST · LVD · D · G · HASS · LANDG · PR · HERSF Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel, unter dem Armabschnitt die Signatur B · I · B (Balthasar Johann Bethmann, Münzmeister in Darmstadt 1707-1733)//L · ÆT · AO · IVBILÆVM · II · ECCL · LVTH · CEL · P . P Gekrönte Hassia kniet nach l. vor einem Altar, an dem die Buchstaben V · D · / · M · / I . Æ · (Verbum domine manet in aeternum = Das Wort Gottes bleibt in Ewigkeit) zu lesen sind, auf dem Altar steht ein Räuchergefäß, auf der unteren Stufe liegt der Fürstenhut; im Abschnitt befindet sich das Datum: . 31 . OCT . / 1717. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. 3. bekanntes Exemplar. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Goldpatina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Walther, Mainz, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 422, Frankfurt/Main 2018, Nr. 1238. Mit altem Sammlerkärtchen. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Ernest Louis, 1678-1739, ducat of 1717, Darmstadt mint, on the bicentennial of the Reformation. Obverse: armored and matled bust right, initials below; reverse: crowned figure of Hassia kneels to left, before an altar inscribed 'V · D · / · M · / I . Æ ·' buring incense, the princely hat at the base. Extremely rare, three examples known, attractive example with fine gold patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The legend on the altar, "V[erbum] · D[omine] · / · M[anet] · / I[n] . Æ[ternum] ·", translates as, "The word of God remains for eternity." Numerous Lutheran states, including Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Esslingen, Hamburg. Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Saxe-Saalfeld and Stolberg, issued coins on this occasion.
