Künker sale 297, lot 3934
Wurzburg in 1648

The first specimen was lot 1533 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Schweinfurt. Reformation Silver Ducat, 1717. On the second anniversary of the Reformation. Candle and Bible on altar. Reverse: Ten lines of legend. Pop 1; The only one graded at PCGS. Light golden toning. PCGS graded MS-61. The Augustana Collection." The second specimen was lot 3934 in Künker Auction 297 (September 2017), where it sold for 3,300 euro. The catalog description noted, "SCHWEINFURT. STADT. Dukat 1717, auf die 200-Jahrfeier der Reformation. BGOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Min. gewellt, vorzüglich. (ducat of 1717, extremely rare, slightly wavy, extremely fine.)" While we note numerous offerings of the silver ducat in the archives, the Künker sale is the last time the gold version was offered for sale. Schweinfurt was an imperial free city on the Main river completely surrounded by the bishopric of Würzburg. It was annexed to Bavaria in 1803 during the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and Wurzburg itself would follow in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: the first specimen silver, the second specimen gold, 3,46 g.

Catalog reference: gold: KM 4, Fr-3108a; silver: KM-4a; Whiting-310.
