Hesse-Darmstadt 1717-BIB thaler Dav-2317
This specimen was lot 2660 in Sincona sale 57 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$952 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Hessen-Darmstadt, Landgrafschaft, ab 1806 Grossherzogtum. Ernst Ludwig, 1648-1739. Taler 1717, Darmstadt. Auf die 200-Jahrfeier der Reformation. Vorzüglich. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Ernest Louis, 1648-1739, thaler of 1717, Darmstadt mint. On the bicentennial of the Reformation. Extremely fine.)"
The legend on the altar, "V[erbum] · D[omine] · / · M[anet] · / I[n] . Æ[ternum] ·", translates as, "The word of God remains for eternity." Numerous Lutheran states, including Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Esslingen, Hamburg. Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Saxe-Saalfeld and Stolberg, issued coins on this occasion.
