Sincona sale 83, lot 2337

This specimen was lot 2337 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,692 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "BELGIUM Brabant, Herzogtum, Philipp IV. von Spanien, 1621-1665. 2 Souverain d'or 1637, Antwerpen. Selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. Minimal berieben, sonst prachtvolle Erhaltung (Rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Very minor hairlines, otherwise magnificent condition)." This type is recorded for 1628-37 from the Brussels (angel face mintmark) and Antwerp mints (hand mintmark, shown here). In 1637, the obverse was revised to show the king with an older bust in a flat collar rather than the ruffed collar shown here.

Recorded mintage: 40,000 plus 23,000 from Brussels.

Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold; this specimen 11.08 g.
