Sincona sale 47, lot 2925

This specimen was lot 2925 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 6,000 CHF (about US$7,200 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND, Schwyz, Dicken 1656. Gekrönter Doppelkadler mit Nimben, unten im Abschnitt leeres Schwyzerwappen zwischen Jahreszahl 16 - 56. Rv. Hl. Martin zu Pferd nach rechts, den Mantel für den Bettler teilend. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (canton of Schwyz, dicken of 1656. Obverse: crowned, nimbate double headed eagle supports the cantonal arms and divides the date: reverse: St. Martin rides to ride, dividing his cloak with the beggar. Very rare, Very fine.)"

A dicken was about one quarter thaler. This rare type of 1623, 1629 and 1656 is priced even higher than the thaler (Dav-4629).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7.08 g.
