Netherlands 1868 2-1/2 gulden

Sincona sale 26, lot 3553

This specimen was lot 3553 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$803 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Wilhelm III. 1849-1890 2 1/2 Gulden 1868. Utrecht. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. NGC MS64. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William III, 1849-90, 2½ gulden of 1868, Utrecht mint. Scarce in this quality, uncirculated, in NGC MS-64 holder.)"

The specimen shown is a late date of a type struck at the Utrecht mint for the Netherlands 1849-74. Most of the dates are common. After the final issue of 1874, no 2½ gulden were issued until 1898. The 0.945 fine alloy seems to be unique to the Netherlands.
