Sincona sale 26, lot 2632

This specimen was lot 2632 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,212 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634 3 Taler 1618. Goslar oder Zellerfeld Löser mit Wertpunze "3" auf dem Revers. Münzmeister Heinrich Öckeler. Der geharnischte Herzog reitet nach rechts mit Kommandostab in der Rechten. Rv. Fünffach behelmtes Wappen von zwei Wilden Männern gehalten. Sehr selten. attraktives sehr schönes Exemplar. Henkelspur, sonst. (Germany, principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, triple thaler of 1618, Goslar or Zellerfeld mint, '3' punched into the reverse, mint master, Heinrich Öckeler. The armoered and mounted duke rides right,holding a marshal's baton; reverse: five helmeted arms supported by two wild men. Very rare, handsome example, mount removed, nice very fine.)"

These massive coins were doubtless issued as gifts by the duke to insiders and were not intended to circulate but occasionally needs press.
