This specimen was lot 23090 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, ""ITALY. Papal States. 5 Baiocchi, 1851-R Year VI. Rome Mint. Pius IX. PCGS MS-63 Brown Gold Shield. A premium example of the grade with loads of original red coloration appearing around the protected designs." This type was struck at Rome and Bologna 1850-54. The five baiocchi of 1849-50 was 42 g. A silver five baiocchi was also struck in 1851, with much lower mintage. Both types were struck in years V and VI.
Recorded mintage: 7,948,800 (years V + VI).
Specification: bronze, 38 g, 41 mm diameter.
