Papal States 1852-B 5 baiocchi
This specimen was lot 2525 in Goldberg sale 110 (Los Angeles, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Papal/Roman States. 5 Baiocchi, 1852-B. Year VII. Pius IX. Traces of mint red. NGC graded MS-61 Brown." This type was struck at Bologna and Rome 1850-54. The date 1852 comes with year VI and VII. The SCWC prices them all the same but Gigante awards the Bologna issue a considerable premium. One hundred baiocchi made a scudo. This denomination is known in silver for 1835-66 and in copper for 1849-54. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.
Recorded mintage: 3,351,160 (years VI and VII).
Specification: 42 g, copper, 40-41 mm diameter, plain edge.
