Papal States 1852-R 5 baiocchi KM-1356
This specimen was lot 1545 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1870, AE 5 baiocchi, 1852-R year VII, a lovely partially red lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS63 RB, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This type was struck at Bologna and Rome 1850-54. The date 1852 comes with year VI and VII. The SCWC prices them all the same but Gigante awards the Bologna issue a considerable premium. One hundred baiocchi made a scudo. This denomination is known in silver for 1835-66 and in copper for 1849-54. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.
Recorded mintage: 9,746,000.
Specification: 42 g, copper, 40-41 mm diameter, plain edge.
