This specimen was lot 31680 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "William II 40 Shilling 1697 VF30 NGC. A choice example of this poplar crown featuring the bust of William II with steel gray-patination and light rainbow toning at the top of the bust. A bit of pitting throughout the flan but at this point it really only adds to the charm of this piece. Nicely struck with full face features and excellent eye-appeal." This denomination was introduced in Scotland in 1687, during the reign of James II and was struck until 1700. It is roughly four English shillings.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
