Sincona sale 26, lot 3083

This specimen was lot 3083 in Sincona sale 26 (Zurich, October 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Consulat, 1799-1804 5 Francs AN 12 (1803-04). K, Bordeaux. Fast sehr schön-sehr schön (France, Consulate, five francs of the year 12, Bordeaux mint. Very fine or better.)"

Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Bordeaux mint (mint mark "K") in 1803-04. It is a better date of a somewhat scarce type. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the second, struck 1803-04 (AN 12) with a complete set of this type comprising fifteen date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819; this specimen 24.76 g.

Recorded Mintage: 462,181[2].

Catalog reference: Dav-82; Gadoury 577, KM 659.7, F.301/17.
