Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71339
SB223-71339r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71339 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARUBA. 5 Florins, 2013. Utrecht Mint. William Alexander. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. A wholesome and flawless proof, this tremendous example yields enticing appeal." Aruba, along with Curaçao and Bonaire, lies off the shore of Venezuela in the Caribbean. For centuries a colony of the Netherlands, agitation for independence began in the 1970's as locals resented perceived domination by Curaçao. Arubans voted for independence in 1986, to be granted in 1996, but the process was halted when the oil refinery there closed, halving government revenue. This NCLT was issued for a visit by the Dutch king and queen. Other five florins include KM 38, KM 52 (abdication of queen Beatrix) and KM 53 (coronation of Willem Alexander).

Recorded mintage: 1,250.

Specification: 25 g, 0.925 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered GOD * ZIJ * MET * ONS *.

Catalog reference: KM-54.
