Sincona sale 43, lot 3740

This specimen was lot 3740 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 32,000 CHF (about US$38,186 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Batthyani, Fürstentum, Karl Josef, 1764-1772 10 Dukaten 1764. Wien Auf seine Erhebung in den Reichsfürstenstand. Geharnischtes Brustbild mit Zopf und Kette vom Goldenen Vlies. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen mit Wappenhaltern im gekrönten Wappenmantel. Von grosser Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleine Randfehler und min. Bearbeitungsspur im Feld. (principality of Batthyani, Charles Joseph, 1764-72, ten ducats of 1764, on receiving the rank of imperial prince. Obverse: armored bust with the Order of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned and mantled arms. Of high rarity, Very fine-extremely fine, Minor edge nicks and a bit of tooling in the obverse fields.)"

"Count Károly József Batthyány of Németújvár (Hungarian: németújvári gróf Batthyány Károly József, Károly József Batthyány, German: Karl Josef Graf Batthyány, Croatian: Karlo Josip grof Baćan; 28 April 1697, Rohonc – 15 April 1772, Vienna) was a Hungarian general and field marshal. He served as ban (viceroy) of Croatia from 1743 to 1756."

This scarce type was minted 1764 only. A ducat (Fr-552), five ducats (Fr-551) and thaler (Dav-1182) also exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.
