This specimen was lot 510 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 4 reales, 1748 V, very rare, ex-Ponte. Choice full pillars containing a full and bold date, the full cross-lions-castles also choice but off-center, clear parts of all three assayers, VF with deeply toned fields, some peripheral flatness. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection." Four reales of this type were struck 1747-51 for Ferdinand VI. Assayer de Vargas stamped his coins 1739-48. Specimens with legible dates are scarce. In 1728, the silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine with no change in design.
