photo courtesy Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

This specimen was lot 1625 in Goldberg sale 81 (Los Angeles, September 2014), where it sold for $2,350. The catalog description[1] noted, "Colombia. Cob 2 Escudos, 1654 NR R. Philip IV, 1621-1665. Crowned arms. Reverse: Jerusalem cross in quadrilobe. Double struck. Full date. Rare. NGC graded MS-61. Ex Maravillas Treasure." The production of cobs continued sporadically into the 1740's. It was superseded by milled pillar coinage. As with most cobs, specimens with legible dates form a minority of survivors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, .199 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6690, Fr-2. KM 4.1.
