The United States dollar has a proud history going back to 1794 but the coin has been completely superseded by the dollar bill since the 1920's. Several attempts have been made to circulate a dollar coin, all have failed. The presidential series was introduced in 2007 with the first four presidents and the initial quantities were large. There was a flurry of curiosity as these appeared, which was soon replaced by indifference. The mint persisted, striking over sixty million of each design during 2008-11. In 2012, the mint gave up and struck the Chester Arthur and later issues only for collectors. The series ended in 2016 with Ronald Reagan. George Bush was added to the series in 2020.
Recorded mintage: 64,260,000 plus 745,464 in satin finish.
Specification: 8.07 g, manganese brass (6 Zn-3.5 Mn-2 Ni-88.5 Cu), 26.49 mm diameter, edge lettered "IN GOD WE TRUST · E PLURIBUS UNUM · 2008 P".
