This specimen was lot 1299 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "UNITED STATES: platinum 50 dollars, 2008-W, NGC graded PF70 Ultra Cameo." This NCLT was struck 2008 only at West Point in honor of the judicial branch along with the usual issue featuring the soaring eagle reverse (KM 285). The United States Mint began striking gold and silver bullion coins in 1986 but did not add platinum to the portfolio until 1997.
Recorded mintage: 2,253 plus 4,020 proofs.
Specifications: 15.56 g, 0.9995 platinum, 27 mm diameter, reeded edge, 0.50 troy oz APtW.
