The United States dollar has a proud history going back to 1794 but the coin has been completely superseded by the dollar bill since the 1920's. Several attempts have been made to circulate a dollar coin, all have failed. Sacagawea has graced the obverse since 2000, with the reverse honoring a different facet of Native American culture each year. This issue depicts Mary Golda Ross (August 9, 1908 – April 29, 2008), believed to be the first female engineer of Native American descent.
