Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 73023
SB222-73023r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73023 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Florin, 1915. London Mint. George V. PCGS AU-50. A hard to find date in the series, this example has one of the lowest mintage of any George V Florin as a result of World War One, with mintage being split between the Heaton and Royal Mints. Some evident wear is present, though even and not of an unattractive amount. All in all, a fully handsome piece with a bit of mint luster remaining. From the Hobart Collection." The type was issued 1911-36 with Melbourne being the sole producer after 1926. This London date is rare; a Heaton issue exists for 1915 but is little more available.

Recorded mintage: 500,000, the key date.

Specification: 11.31 g, 0.925 fine silver, 28.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-27.
