Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 55512

This specimen was lot 55512 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BELGIUM. Ghent. Mint Error -- Dies Rotated 90 Degrees Counterclockwise -- Franken, "1915" (ca. 1920). Albert I. PCGS MS-64." In 1914, Belgium was unwillingly dragged into World War One when she was invaded and overrun by the Germans. For the city of Ghent, the occupiers issued fifty centimes, one, two and five franken tokens. This piece, tho in the same style, was actually struck after the war in 1920 to raise money for reconstruction.

Recorded mintage: 370,000 in brass plated steel (KM Tn2) plus restrikes in gilt brass (KM Tn3).
