This specimen was lot 3184 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 35 € (about US$45 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Bélgica. 1917. Gante. 5 francos. Moneda acuñada durante la ocupación alemana, en la Primera Guerra Mundial. Corrosiones en el anverso. Hierro chapado en latón. MBC-/MBC [coin minted during the German occupation of World War One. Corrosion on the obverse, iron plated with brass, about very fine]." In 1914, Belgium was unwillingly dragged into World War One when she was invaded and overrun by the Germans. For the city of Ghent, the occupiers issued fifty centimes, one, two and five franken tokens.
