This specimen was lot 2763 in Goldberg sale 53 (Beverly Hills, May 2009), where it sold for $1,250. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. 4 Escudos, 1854-MB (Lima). Liberty standing holding shield and pole. Reverse: Arms. Lustrous and scarce in grade. NGC graded MS-61." This type was struck in Lima 1828 and 1850-55 only and is the scarcest gold denomination for Peru. There is no mention of Cuzco or Arequipa striking this type.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.50 g, .875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW.
