This specimen is one of a series struck 1840-56 at the Lima mint. The date is listed in the SCWC as common, tho all Peruvian minors are scarcer in nice condition than the catalog values would indicate. Assayer MB is recorded for 1838-58. It was legal tender in the United States until 1857 for 50¢.

The coin shown was lot 27112 and sold on Apr 18, 2011 for $138 at the 2011 April Rosemont Signature World & Ancient Coins CICF Auction #3014 by Heritage Auctions. The catalog description read: "Republic 4 Reales 1854-MB, MS62 NGC, Lima mint. Few around in mint state."
