India 1920(b) 8 annas

Goldberg sale 80, lot 4177

This specimen was lot 4177 in Goldberg sale 80 (Los Angeles, June 2014), where it sold for $734. The catalog description^[1] noted, "India - British. 8 Annas, 1920 (b). Copper-Nickel. George V. Restrike. NGC graded Proof 65." This eight annas was struck at the Bombay mint after World War One. A wartime surge in the price of silver prompted the British authorities to replace the silver half rupee with this copper-nickel type. It must not have been a success as it was dropped after only two years (1919-20). Likewise, the copper-nickel four annas was abandoned after 1921.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus proofs and restrikes.
