This specimen was lot 31402 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis XV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1756-D MS61 NGC, Lyon mint. An irrefutable semi-Prooflike finish heightens the drama of the decidedly sharp devices on this beautiful specimen. Capped by light noise and gentle rub, but still tied for NGC's top pop." This type was struck in France 1742-73 in some numbers. The type is common altho most individual dates are rare. The Lyon mint struck this type 1742-45, 1748, 1753, 1755-57, 1759-64, 1769-72 with most dates being very rare.

Recorded mintage: 78,171[2].

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
