Aureo sale 243, lot 626

This specimen was lot 626 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 1,650 € (about US$2,493 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,

"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1776. Popayán. JS. 8 escudos. Golpecitos y hojitas. Parte de brillo original. Muy rara. (MBC+). (Eight escudos of 1776, Popayán mint. Nicks and scratches, some original luster, very rare, very fine.)"

This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1772-84 and is the most common gold coin of Charles III. It remains much in demand and is still expensive. Many overdates are recorded.
