Sedwick Treasure auction 26, lot 158

This specimen was lot 158 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $2,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosi, Bolivia, cob 4 reales, 1617M, Grade 1. Bold date outside of full but slightly off-center cross, well-detailed full shield, practically no corrosion, silvery. Pedigreed to the Classics collection, with Fisher tag and photo-certificate #96A-20588. Recovered from Atocha, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida." This type was struck 1605-21, throughout the reign of Philip III. Dates were added in 1617; even so, many are so crudely made that the dates are not legible.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 13.54 g, .931 fine silver, this specimen 12.79 g.

Catalog reference: S-P19; KM-9; CT-245, Cayón-4807.
