Revision as of 12:52, 2 November 2024
This specimen was lot 71175 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1728-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Jose Matienzo (M). Philip V. PCGS EF-45. An impressive 8 Reales cob from the beginning of the second reign of Philip V. Despite the off-center strike, the obverse presents the mintmark, denomination, assayer, and date in their entirety, as well as portions of the second mintmark and assayer's initial. The reverse features another mintmark, date, and partial assayer initial around the bold central cross. A sharp and attractive large cob with considerable eye appeal; sure to generate significant interest from bidders. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Paul Karon Collection (Ponterio 3/90) Lot # 217." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign--unlike in Europe, his rule was never challenged in America. Assayer M stamped coins 1728-33. A mule exists where a reverse die from 1725 was used.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 25.83 g.
