This specimen was lot 4239 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it sold for $97.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hong Kong. 50 Cents, 1902. Edward VII. Blue and red toning. NGC graded AU-53. The Charles Ruby Collection." This type was struck 1902-05 and is not common. No additional fifty cent pieces were struck for Hong Kong until 1951, by which time the coin was brass. British coinage for Hong Kong ceased in 1997 when the island was returned to China.
Recorded mintage: 100,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 13.57 g, .800 fine silver, .349 troy oz ASW.
