This specimen was lot 23597 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 3 Reis, 1804. Lisbon Mint. Maria I. PCGS MS-63 Brown Gold Shield. One-year type. A fully choice example of this seldom encountered issue, coined shortly before Napoleon's invasion of the country in 1807. Presently for the finest Brown piece at PCGS with a single MS-63 Red Brown." This denomination, struck intermittently in the eighteenth century, was the smallest denomination of Portugal. The last three réis was issued in 1818 (KM 354).
